National Hunt Racing at Bangor-on -Dee Racecourseby Emma Lord, Aug 2018
Bangor-on-Dee racecourse is set in the beautiful North Wales countryside and stages 14 exciting jump racing fixtures a year on the banks of the River Dee.
Many re-knowned national hunt trainers send their horses to Bangor during both the summer and winter months. It can pay to follow local trainer Donald McCain, as his stake rate is second to none at Bangor.
The race course is great – much smaller than Aintree or Haydock but that is a good thing. You get much closer to the horses, jockeys and owners. Bangor-on-Dee’s unique character is exemplified by the fact that this is the only Racecourse in the country that doesn´t have a Grandstand but that doesn’t detract from the many fantastic vantage points, the grass bank providing a natural amphitheatre to the racing action. One little bit of advice, wrap up during the winter months, as the course is open to all of the elements! In the concourse areas, hearty food and cosy bars add to the ‘Bangor’ experience, all a stone’s throw away from spotting one of racing’s stars in the Paddock.
It definitely is worth a visit to this beautiful course!
