Hair dye removal from carpet

by Jacqui Boorman, Jun 2019

Hair dye is one of the tougher stains to remove. Act quickly using the tips below. Always test a cleaning solution in an out-of-the-way spot to determine if it will damage the carpet.

Method 1 – Hair Spray

  1. Spray Hair Spray on the stain, wetting it completely.
  2. Allow the hair spray to stay on the stain for five minutes.
  3. Rinse with cold water.
  4. Repeatedly blot the area with a clean dry cloth.
  5. When the area is totally dry, vacuum to revive the carpet fibres.

Note: The acetone in the hair spray can change the colour of the carpet so be sure to test this out on an areas which won’t be seen.

Method 2 – Baby Shampoo

  1. If the dye you used was water soluble, you can try baby shampoo.
  2. Apply water to the stain and dab a couple of drops of the shampoo on the stain, gently rubbing in.
  3. Rinse with cold water and repeat until the stain is gone.
  4. Dab the area with a clean dry cloth.
  5. When the area is totally dry, vacuum to revive the carpet fibres.
