Oktoberfest at Broad Chareby Lisa Salisbury, Sep 2018
Guten Tag! Freust du dich auf das Oktoberfest? Ich bin es auf jeden Fall!
The biggest and best beer festival, Oktoberfest, is coming to Newcastle and no pub is more prepared for it than Broad Chare!
The self-proclaimed ‘proper pub’ is gearing up for the event from September 29th to October 6th. They will be providing traditional German beer, as well as themed snacks, including Sauerkraut, Bratwurst and many more tasty treats. Wunderbar!
Oktoberfest began on 12th of October in 1810 to celebrate Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) marrying the Princess Teresa of Sassonia-Hildburghausen.
The citizens of Munich were all invited to celebrate in the fields in front of the gate. In 1811, the horse race, which originally took place at the celebration, was cancelled in lieu of an agricultural fair in order to promote the Bavarian economy.
In 1910, Oktoberfest celebrated its 100th anniversary, with the people consuming around 120,000 litres of beer. Now that’s what I call a drinking challenge!
In 2010, the festivals 200 year anniversary, a horse race took place in order to properly celebrate the occasion. People wore historical costumes and special beer was served at the southern part of the original fields. This gave visitors a sense of going back in time.
This festival clearly has some historische Bedeutung, and the best place to celebrate it in Newcastle is clearly Broad Chare, from the 29th of September to 6th of October. Book your tables now and…
Wir sehen uns dort!
