Merthyr Tydfil – Outdoor Activities

by Wayne Foley, Feb 2019

From a brisk walk in the countryside, to scaling the face of a rock wall which appears to be unclimbable, Merthyr Tydfil has a great variety of outdoor activities for the whole family!

You may enjoy an afternoon of fishing, in which case the River Taff plays host to a lot of great catches, including salmon, sea trout and even eel! The fish of the River Taff tend to have an average weight of about 1/2 lbs to 3/4 lbs, however, on occasion, auspicious anglers have been known to catch fish upwards of 4lbs!

Merthyr Tydfil is actually very lucky in the fact that it hosts two beautiful golf courses as well. The Morlais Catsle Golf Club boasts an impressive 6550 yard course and is accessible for golfers of any skill level. The entire course has a par of 71. For a more high altitude game, maybe consider Merthyr Tydfil Golf Club. The 5652 course sits atop a wonderful mountain scape, with some parts of the fairway lying at over 1000 feet above sea level! The par for this course is 69.

Of course, not everyone wants to get wet, or carry a load of clubs around all day. So for the more relaxed of our readers, we recommend a brisk walk, cycle or horse back adventure along one of Merthyr Tydfil’s many scenic trails. The Taff trail takes you on a 55 mile journey from Cardiff bay to the quaint market town of Brecon, all the while following a historically essential transport link for the growth of Merthyr Tydfil. On the other hand, the Celtic trail isn’t for the casuals. The 377 mile route has been called one of the best in the country by The Guardian.

There really is something for everyone in Merthyr Tydfil!
