Cleaning the House with Kidsby Jason Campbell, Jan 2020
While we all love our children more than anything in the world, we do sometimes wish they would try and be a bit more, well, grown up in certain regards. It seems that, for a lot of people, maintaining a clean and tidy house can have to take a bit of a backseat with the little ones around. Here’s how to keep your house clean with kids:
Know Everything’s Place: You and your children should both know where everything is supposed to go when they’ve finished playing with it. This will make toys easier to find in the first place and greatly declutter the playroom, living room, etc.
Rules Around Playtime: Now, try not to go overboard on this, but having a more structured playtime with an allotted time slot and certain restrictions can actually be very beneficial for both the child and the decluttering project. Studies have shown children use play as a form of rehearsal for real life situations they will encounter in adulthood. This will also help you fit in your cleaning time slot.
Teach the Kids to Clean Up: Consider trying, if your child refuses to help, confiscating that toy they wouldn’t put away until they decide they’re willing to earn it back, through chores.
The ‘Lord of the Flies’ Method: If you have multiple children, allow them to take turns in being ‘the boss’ for a tidy-up period. Since children love being granted authority, they will pay close attention to whether the other children tidy up in a correct manner. This method also allows you to put your feet up for 10 minutes!
