Who the Fawkes is Guy and Why do we Celebrate Bonfire Night?by Julie Kempson, Nov 2018
Now that Halloween is over with, the next major event before Christmas that the Well Polished Crawley team will be celebrating is Bonfire Night where traditionally we burn a Guy on a bonfire and set of fireworks.
But have you ever wondered why do we celebrate the 5 November and asked the question who the Fawkes is Guy?
Among others, Guy Fawkes famously plotted to blow up England’s King James 1 and the English Parliament on 5 November 1605 in what has now become known as the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The plot was organised in an effort to end the persecution of Roman Catholics by the English Government.
The Gunpowder Plot was foiled, the King was safe and Parliament was saved from destruction. In order to celebrate this, bonfires were set alight around the country to celebrate the safety of the King. And so since 1605, 5th November has become known as Bonfire Night and is commemorated each year with fireworks and the burning of a Guy on a bonfire.
As always, there will be many local events going on – why not check out this one at Three Bridges Football Club on Saturday 3 November, doors open at 6pm.
Or perhaps you fancy a quieter affair in your own back garden surrounded by family and friends. Remember, if you need a cleaner to come and tidy up after your celebrations then get in touch with Well Polished Crawley.
Wherever you are and whatever you do – stay safe! And have fun!
