Pumpkins, broomsticks, witches … It’s Halloween!by Julie Kempson, Oct 2018
Halloween is one of our favourite times of the year at Well Polished Crawley.
Halloween takes place on the night of 31 October and is traditionally said to be the time when ghosts and witches can be seen!
It is also a time for trick or treating – a Halloween custom for children and their parents – when children dress up (often as ghosts, witches and skeletons!) and travel from house to house asking for treats by using the phrase “trick or treat”. The homeowner will usually provide a treat – most often in the form of sweets and candy. The trick bit refers to a threat (usually an idle one) to perform some mischief on the homeowner who doesn’t want to give a treat.
Often homeowners will signal that they are willing to give out treats by putting up decorations outside their doors – often in the form of a carved pumpkin. Originally a turnip was used for this purpose but nowadays, pumpkins are more popular. The inside is scooped out and funny or scary face is carved in to the pumpkin which is then lit up by a candle being placed within.
