M23 SMART IMPROVEMENTS LIKELY TO CAUSE CONGESTION IN CRAWLEY NEXT WEEKENDby Julie Kempson, May 2019
As part of the £164 million M23 Smart motorway works that are currently underway, next weekend will see the temporary closure of Junction 9 on the M23 which is likely to cause some extra congestion around the Crawley area as travellers for Gatwick Airport are diverted!
The closure will begin on Friday 17th May at 22.00 and is expected to be completed by midnight on Sunday 19th May, with the M23 westbound at junction 9 being shut meaning there will be no access to Gatwick Airport from the motorway.
Roadworks will be taking place in areas including Junction 9, Gatwick spur and roundabout. Southbound exit slip and northbound exit slip will both be closed for traffic and there will not be any access at all in to Gatwick from Junction 9.
However a statement issued by Highways England has confirmed that “The M23 main carriageway in both directions will be open for traffic. There will be a fully signed diversion route in place.”
The following diversions will be in place:
Southbound traffic coming from M25 will be diverted to Junction 10 and via Crawley to reach Gatwick (via A2011 Crawley Avenue, A23 London Road and Airport Way)
Northbound traffic travelling from Brighton will be diverted off the M23 at Junction and via the same Crawley route to reach Gatwick
Northbound travellers who miss the initial diversion at Junction 10 will have to follow a secondary diversion to the M25 Junction 6 (Godstone) and return to Junction 10 via the southbound carriageway.
The closure is that latest stage in this huge project involving major work taking place between Junction 8 on the M25 and Junction 10 at Copthorne with advanced work starting back in July last year. One of the key aspects of this project is converting the hard shoulder on the main M23 into a permanent 4th lane and increasing the westbound Gatwick spur to three lanes.

For any of you lucky enough to be getting off over the next weekend, make sure you allow yourself some extra time to get to the Airport.
