IT’S LADIES DAY AT ROYAL ASCOT

by Julie Kempson, Jun 2019

Royal Ascot is well underway, starting this year on the 18th June and finishing on Sunday 22nd June, with each day hosting a different event, there is always something for everyone.  Heralded as the most valuable race meeting held in Britain, it attracts many of the world’s finest racehorses all competing for millions of pounds in prize money!

TUESDAY 18 JUNE

The first day of this five day spectacular event sees the arrival of the Royal Procession always at 2pm sharp,  followed by six world class races throughout the afternoon.

WEDNESDAY 19 JUNE

A more gentle pass of racing today, with gates opening at 10.30 and the first race taking place at 2.30.  The feature race is the Prince of Wales’s Stakes – considered by many to be Ascot’s most important race of the modern era, it was first run to honour the then Prince of Wales in 1862.

THURSDAY 20 JUNE – LADIES DAY

This day is steeped in tradition being the home of the famed Gold Cup.   It is the world’d premier race for horses that are specialists in long distances, and is Ascot’s oldest surviving race.    This race has provided some the Meeting’s greatest moments, including in 2013, when the Queen’s filly, Estimate, was the first winning horse of the Gold Cup ever by a reigning Monarch.

It is also Ladies Day!   On this day for more than 100 years, high up members of the Royal Family including the Queen attend the meeting.  Traditionally on Ladies Day, women are granted free entry or discounted tickets for events that would ordinarily be for men only.  It is a day when punters take the opportunity to dress up, socialise and place bets on various races.

FRIDAY 21 JUNE

Six top class races take place today including the Coronation Stakes which is an exciting one mile race for three year old fillies, one of the flat season’s most important races for young sprinters.

SATURDAY 22 JUNE

The final day of this event, with a more relaxed atmosphere, the highlight of the day is the Diamond Jubilee one of the world’s great international sprint races.
