3 TOP TIPS FOR TAKING CARE IN THE HEAT

It’s not often that we see the sun here in the UK so when we do, we can get carried away and can often forget how to stay safe.  

Here are 3 top tips for keeping safe in the hot sunny weather. 

DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS 

It is important to stay hydrated in hot weather.  Sound advice is to drink plenty of fluids – the best option being water – but tea, coffee and lower fat milks are all good alternative options.  Avoid any excess alcohol!   Fruit juice, smoothies and soft drinks should only be consumed on a limited basis due to their often high sugar content.   

SLAP ON THE SUNSCREEN 

We can often forget to do this – after all, we don’t see the sun that often so when we do, we want to get out in it and get a nice tan. 

Sunscreen will not stop you getting a tan but it will stop you from getting sunburn.  It is designed to filter UV rays but will not prevent the production of melanin which means you will still get a tan.  To completely protect your skin from the sun, choose a sunblock with a very high SPF (sun protective factor). 

Make sure you apply your sunscreen regularly! 

STAY COOL 

Staying cool in hot weather is not always easy.  Keeping curtains shut will help to keep your home cool.   Wearing light weight cotton clothing and avoiding dark colours is a great idea.   Make sure cental heating is turned off and that you have a good working fan.  Rinsing your wrists under cool water and dunking your feet in a bucket of cold water are great for an instant cool down.
